Why Vegetarian

As previously discussed I have decided to go back to being vegetarian. I don’t really like the use of any real label to describe our dietary lifestyle but I understand it makes it somewhat easier for people to understand certain things about me. I have already been asked a few questions and also had some for myself – all of which I will try to answer here. Once I have – I will be trying my best to not discuss it again.

What about the food already in your house?

The food in the house already will be used. I will not dishonour the animals any further by throwing it away.

So why no meat?

I feel at peace when I do not eat meat. And…

Because I live in a world where animal suffering is unnecessary. I am not in some far flung country that has no other option but to eat animals. I feel blessed that most humans have evolved to a place where we have options available which enable us to be kind to animals and treat them as we ourselves would like to be treated.
I think that the meat industry is one of the most violent industries in the world. Simple. I do not consider any kind of mass slaughter as humane – no matter how it is done. I also do not think animals are there for us to use however we see fit.

What about milk and cheese?

I can easily live without milk and when needed, soy, rice and almond milk will suffice. I also love Notzarella cheese – a vegan option for those of us who still enjoy the gooeyness of a toasted sandwich with cheese or a pizza.

What about eggs?

As many of you know – I used to keep my own chickens and I love them. I ate the egss from our chooks because they were not fertilised and the chooks get to live their life and die as they naturally would. Now that I have no chooks I will not buy eggs. I will however eat some of the Quorn products that contain a small amount of egg white. I hope that the continued support of these products and the growing trend for vegan foods will lean towards them using an alternative ingredient as a binder.

So you are vegan now?

No. I choose 99.9% vegan products but I would prefer to label myself vegetarian so as to not have to deal with the vegan police (and yes they are real!).

Do you like vegetables now?

No not really. I still don’t really like many vegetables except for capsicum, zucchini (raw), broccoli (raw), cauliflower and potato. However I love green smoothies full of spinach and carrot and find it an easy way to get quality food full of goodness into my body.

What about Graeme – will he be vegetarian too?

Probably – he enjoys the lifestyle and actively seeks like-minded people out more then me.

So there you have it – my life, my choice, my truth.
